How to Recreate Office Connections While Working Freelance

Working as a freelancer, especially from home, has so many perks—freedom, flexibility, and the comfort of working in your own space. But there’s one thing many freelancers miss: the office camaraderie. I’ve worked as a social media manager and virtual assistant for wedding, tourism, and hospitality businesses for years, and trust me, I get it. It can feel isolating sometimes, but there are ways to build those connections and recreate the buzz of an office environment, even when you’re your own boss!

Here are a few ways I stay connected and motivated…

Join Co-Working Communities

Just because you're working solo doesn't mean you have to be alone. Co-working spaces, both physical and virtual, are brilliant for tapping into that community feel. If you're not near a physical co-working space, joining virtual sessions can provide structure and accountability, as well as a sense of connection with like-minded freelancers. I offer regular virtual co-working sessions designed for small business owners like you— you can find more details here. It's a great way to stay social, share ideas, and feel like you're part of a team again.

Take Regular Breaks

In an office, you'd have tea breaks or chats with colleagues to break up the day. When you're freelance, it's easy to power through without pausing. Schedule regular breaks into your day, even if it’s just for a cup of tea or a short walk. It helps refresh your mind and gives you that “stepping away from the desk” moment that office workers often enjoy.

Create a ‘Commute’

The commute might be one of the things many of us are glad to leave behind, but it’s surprising how a little transition time can help set the tone for your workday. Try a short walk around the block, or a coffee at your favourite local spot before you dive into your tasks. It separates "home you" from "work you," and provides a mental buffer.

Change Your Workspace

If you’re feeling stuck or lonely, change up your environment. Work from a café, library, or even a co-working space once in a while. The background buzz of people can make you feel more connected, and it's a simple way to shake off cabin fever.

Play Music or Soundscapes

Many offices have that hum of activity—whether it’s people chatting or phones ringing. At home, try playing music or ambient soundscapes (think coffee shop sounds or nature noises). It’s an easy way to mimic the energy of an office and avoid feeling too isolated.

As freelancers, we have the freedom to shape our workday, but that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice connection. Try a few of these tips to recreate that office vibe and keep your motivation high.
